新莊今年正式邁入高齡化社會，根據聯合國世界衛生組織定義，六十五歲以上人口占總人口比率超過百分之七，及邁入高齡化社會。新北市政府主計處統計，今年三月底新莊六十五歲以上老年人口已將近三萬人，占新莊總人口7.22%，已達老人城市的標準。在公共空間方面，也將逐步調整為適合老年人口居住的環境。
新莊區公所工務處秘書謝宗翰於五月卅日表示，由於新莊人口老化已經成為趨勢，公共空間的無障礙設施方面，目前已階段性地調整建設。早期的無障礙設施有凹槽，或是開口太小，現在多採用扇形鋪面取代之。
新莊一○二年改為扇形鋪面及設立路阻的路段，包含中華路公園路口、鳳山街、富國路、幸福路、化成路、五工二路巷口、中山路一段及三段。謝宗翰表示，扇形鋪面主要就是希望身心殘障者或行動不便的老人在任何方向都可以上去。
華山基金會新莊天使站的義工李彥徵長期照顧獨居老人，他於五月卅日表示，道路的無障礙設施非常重要，因為老人的膝蓋不好，要抬腳有難度，到一個程度後就需要用拐杖，嚴重一點就要坐輪椅。「我覺得新莊最近的設施做得還不錯，基本上都會有坡道。」
蔡邵奶奶在新莊昌明里居住超過卅年，今年已經九十一歲，因為骨質疏鬆的關係，雖然偶爾還能行走，但平日行動多半倚賴輪椅。照顧她的外籍看護每隔二、三天，就會推她到福壽公園跟附近居民聊天，她於五月廿六日表示，新莊近幾年的人行道越來越多，「在新莊活動的確越來越方便。」

李彥徵表示，台灣很早就進入老人化社會，新莊也在近幾個月成為老人城市。除了公共設施外，新莊的政府單位應該要開始要注意區內的老年政策是否適當，資源是否運用得當，「避免有的長輩拿很多，有的長輩卻無飯可吃。」
